Hundreds of people have gathered to remember Japanese photographer, Tanuma Takeyoshi, who died in June last year at the age of 93.
Tanuma traveled to more than 130 countries and regions as a photojournalist to take pictures of local children. In 2019, he became the first photographer to be awarded the Order of Culture, Japan's highest cultural honor.
About 500 people attended a memorial event in Tokyo on Wednesday. They offered a silent prayer for him.
Japanese TV personality, Kuroyanagi Tetsuko, who traveled to conflict zones with Tanuma as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, delivered a speech.
Kuroyanagi said she wanted to visit children with him again, adding that she wants him to watch over her.
Photographer Tanai Fumio, one of the organizers of the event, said Tanuma recorded how not only children but also adults, who were around them, lived. He expressed his wish to continue what Tanuma had worked on.
An exhibition of Tanuma's works will be held at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum from Friday.
