G7 foreign ministers to discuss Ukraine at Canada meeting NHK

Foreign ministers of the Group of Seven countries meeting in Canada are expected to discuss the Ukraine situation on Thursday.

The focus will be on how the G7 members assess a US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine and what approach they will take toward Russia's invasion.

The ministers started the three-day meeting in Charlevoix, Quebec, on Wednesday.

During a session on Ukraine scheduled for the second day, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to brief other members on the steps US President Donald Trump plans to take to achieve a ceasefire.

Ukraine has expressed its readiness to accept the ceasefire proposal. Senior US officials are also talking with Russia over the matter.

But differences among the G7 nations are already apparent.

Before the meeting, Rubio indicated that he wants to avoid a G7 statement that is abrasive and might hinder efforts to bring Russia to the negotiating table.

European countries remain critical of what they describe as Russian aggression. Regarding a ceasefire, they have emphasized the need for security guarantees to prevent Ukraine from facing another invasion by Russia.
