An executive of Japan's main governing Liberal Democratic Party has indicated that the party has no plan to send its lawmakers to a conference on the UN nuclear weapons ban treaty.

LDP Secretary-General Moriyama Hiroshi on Tuesday spoke about the meeting of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons to be held in New York in March.

Moriyama's remarks came as the government and the ruling coalition are considering sending lawmakers to the meeting. Meanwhile, the government maintains its stance of not attending it as an observer.

Moriyama said the LDP follows the government policy of achieving a nuclear-free world by joining in the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

The NPT obliges five nuclear powers to negotiate nuclear arms reduction while banning others from developing or possessing nuclear weapons.

He disclosed that he conveyed the party's intention to its coalition partner Komeito, which calls for taking part in the New York meeting as an observer.

Komeito Secretary General Nishida Makoto said his party will send its lawmakers because it believes that learning what is discussed at the meeting and exchanging views with other participants is meaningful.

He also said Komeito is asking the government to participate as an observer so that Japan, the only country that has experienced atomic bombings, can serve as a bridge between countries that have nuclear weapons and those that do not.

Nishida also said Japan cannot serve as a bridge without knowing what is discussed at the meeting.

He added that other parties will make their own decisions on the matter.

Asked by reporters whether the government will participate in the meeting as an observer, Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru said the meeting will be held in March and the government will consider the matter on its own.
