Japan's Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko has congratulated Lai Ching-te as the president-elect of Taiwan.

Kamikawa issued a statement on Saturday, noting the smooth conduct of the democratic election, and congratulating Lai on his victory.

She said that for Japan, Taiwan is an extremely crucial partner and an important friend, with which it shares fundamental values and enjoys close economic relations and people-to-people exchanges.

Kamikawa said the Japanese government will work to further deepen cooperation and exchanges between Japan and Taiwan, based on its position of maintaining a working relationship on a non-governmental basis.

She also said Japan expects issues surrounding Taiwan will be resolved peacefully through dialogue, thereby contributing to the peace and stability in the region.
