World leaders are to address the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday. Speakers on the day include US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The Ukrainian leader is attending the meeting in person for the first time since Russia's invasion started. Zelenskyy is also expected to attend a meeting of leaders from the UN Security Council member states, and separately meet several leaders. He is expected to seek more arms and other forms of support for Ukraine's counteroffensive to recapture territories from Russia. The president also hopes to gain support from many countries for his peace plan that includes the withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukraine. The prolonged invasion is causing global surges of food and energy prices and seriously impacting developing countries. Some developing and emerging economies, known as Global South, are calling for an immediate ceasefire. Analysts say, to gain further support from the global community, Zelenskyy needs to show a willingness to cooperate with developing economies and address various difficulties facing them. The UN General Assembly also has a mountain of other problems to deal with, such as delayed measures to tackle climate change and sustainable development goals which have fallen behind schedule.
