People in the US have marked two years since a deadly attack on their seat of government. They commemorated the anniversary of the Capitol riot and honored the men and women who stood in defense. President Joe Biden cited their "exemplary contributions to democracy." Biden hosted a ceremony at the White House on Friday to award the Presidential Citizens Medal to 14 people. They included police officers injured in the attack. Biden said, "Two years ago, our democracy held because we the people, as the Constitution refers, we the people did not flinch. We the people endured, we the people prevailed." Thousands of protestors marched to Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021, refusing to accept the results of the 2020 presidential election. Former President Donald Trump held a rally to repeat his lies that the election was stolen, telling his supporters to "fight like hell." At least five people died in the riot and its aftermath. Lawmakers in the House of Representatives gathered outside the Capitol for a moment of silence. Families of the victims called out the names of their loved ones as a bell was rung in their honor. A small group of Trump supporters held their own rally, still repeating their mistaken belief that Trump had won.
