Number of visitors to Japan nears pre-pandemic level NHK

The number of foreign travelers to Japan has topped 2 million for a second consecutive month. The figure has now recovered to 77 percent of the pre-pandemic level, with growth driven largely by the weaker yen.

The Japan National Tourism Organization says about 2.3 million foreign travelers visited last month.

South Korea had the most, with over 620 thousand. It was followed by Taiwan, mainland China and Hong Kong.

The total number of visitors excluding those from China exceeded the pre-pandemic mark, setting a new monthly record.

Group travel to Japan was still restricted by China in July. But the government lifted this measure earlier this month, making it likely the number of foreign travelers will continue to grow.
