Ex-Thai PM Thaksin returns to country ahead of court ruling NHK

Influential former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has reportedly returned to the country from Dubai ahead of a court ruling that could see him jailed.

Thaksin is the father of ousted prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. He flew from Bangkok to the Middle Eastern city on Thursday, a day before the prime ministerial vote that saw the pro-Thaksin Pheu Thai Party lose control of parliament.

Thaksin was ousted from power in a coup in 2006. He returned home in 2023 after self-imposed exile. He was found guilty of crimes including corruption, but stayed in a hospital instead of prison citing poor health.

A ruling is scheduled on Tuesday over the hospital stay. If the court rules Thaksin's sentence was not properly enforced, the 76-year-old could face jail time.
