Developing typhoon Shanshan is expected to approach western to eastern Japan from Tuesday, likely to cause rough weather.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says that as of 9 a.m. on Saturday, Shanshan is moving northward over waters near the Ogasawara Islands.

It has developed into a strong typhoon with a central atmospheric pressure of 980 hectopascals and was packing maximum sustained winds of 126 kilometers per hour near its center, with peak gusts of 180 kilometers per hour.

The agency forecasts that the typhoon will develop to the very strong level south of Japan on Tuesday. It may approach western through eastern Japan without losing most of its power.

Those areas, mainly on the Pacific side, may receive increasingly strong rain and winds and could experience severe weather conditions.

Rough weather may also affect northern Japan from Wednesday.

Weather officials say heavy rain may start even before the typhoon approaches Japan with full impact.
