The Taliban interim government in Afghanistan have reacted to Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election by saying it hopes it opens a new chapter in relations with the US. The interim government's foreign ministry spokesperson Abdul Qahar Balkhi posted a statement on X following the election results. He expressed hope that the incoming administration would adopt a pragmatic approach to advance ties between the two sides. The spokesperson also referred to the peace deal signed with the US under Trump in Doha in 2020. He said the agreement led to the end of the twenty-year occupation of Afghanistan. He added that the Taliban expect Trump to play a constructive role in ending the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon. Western countries have kept strict sanctions on Afghanistan as the Taliban have severely restricted women's rights. Meanwhile China and Russia have moved to deepen ties with the group. Some observers say the Trump administration may try to approach the Taliban to counter the two countries.
