The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, says it's holding more than 100 Israelis captive. The death toll from the latest fierce fighting between the group and Israel has risen to around 1,200. Airstrikes on the Gaza Strip continued on Monday. Israel intensified its bombardment of Gaza to retaliate against Hamas. About 800 targets are said to have been attacked in a 20-hour period that started Sunday. Fighting against Palestinian militants is also taking place in Israel. The death toll on the Israeli side has exceeded 700, while that among Palestinians is reportedly over 490. The chain of violence started on Saturday as Hamas launched large-scale attacks on Israel. Local media say many revelers at a music festival near the village of Re'im close to the Gaza border were gunned down, and that 260 bodies have been found at the site. Some people were taken away by Hamas fighters. A video posted on Saturday shows a woman being shoved onto a motorbike and a man being abducted. The two are said to have been attending the festival. Hamas said in a statement it is holding more than 100 hostages in Gaza. They are thought to include people from Germany, Thailand and other countries. One of the abductees is Natthaporn Onkeaw from Thailand, who started working for an Israeli farmer about two years ago to support his family. His mother Thorgkoon Onkeaw said, "my son must be released. I have no idea why my son was abducted, as he hasn't done anything wrong. I'm so worried I cannot sleep." A report by a major US newspaper is drawing attention. It says Iranian security officials gave the green light on October 2 for Hamas's plan to carry out Saturday's surprise attacks. It says that since August, senior officers in Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had held talks with members of Hamas and the Lebanon-based Shia militant group Hezbollah. The Reuters news agency says the Iranian mission to the United Nations has issued a statement saying no one in the country has been involved in any way. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, "we haven't yet seen direct evidence that Iran is behind this particular attack or involved, but the support of many years is clear." Iranian involvement in the attack, if proven, could further raise tensions in the Middle East.
