NHK has learned that Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru is arranging to officially announce this week that he will raise the minimum annual income subject to taxation.
Sources say Ishiba is expected to announce his intention during a policy speech to be delivered in both chambers of the Diet on Friday.
The main ruling Liberal Democratic Party, its coalition partner Komeito and the opposition Democratic Party for the People had earlier agreed to review the current threshold of 1.03 million yen, or about 6,690 dollars.
Following their loss of a combined majority in the Lower House in last month's general election, the ruling coalition has continued to negotiate a request from the Democratic Party for the People to raise the threshold.
In his speech, Ishiba will also likely express his determination to reach a conclusion on issues such as the anticipated tax revenue decline.
Regarding regional revitalization, which is one of the priorities for his administration, Ishiba is considering doubling grants ahead of schedule and promoting culture, art and sports as new focal areas.
To create attractive workplaces in rural areas, Ishiba will encourage the use of a system that allows individuals to work as full-time employees with shorter hours. He also aims to tackle the decline in the rate of women working as full-time employees after childbirth.
The prime minister is also expected to stress his intention to promote policies earnestly and humbly based on the LDP-Komeito coalition, while listening carefully to other parties' views to form the broadest possible consensus.
