Performers of traditional Japanese arts are urging for an early reopening of the National Theatre, saying that keeping the venue closed for years could lead to a decline in traditional culture. Ten people from various performing arts made the plea at a news conference on Friday. The theater in Tokyo closed last October for reconstruction. But it is now uncertain whether it can be reopened in autumn of 2029 as originally planned since two bids to select companies to undertake the project have failed. Kabuki actor Nakamura Tokizo called the situation grave. He expressed hope that the next bid will be successful so the theater can resume uncut performances of kabuki plays and revive long-lost works. Nishikawa Minosuke, a "nihon buyo" dancer, said he has no idea where dancers can perform if their main stage remains closed for a decade. He said the classical dance is facing a crisis, as some people working in the art form have already quit. Kineya Katsushiro, a performer of "nagauta" music, said the waiting period until the theater reopens could put the art's future at stake and people may lose interest in traditional arts. He added the theater should reopen soon to help train young performers.
