36 dead in Sao Paulo, Brazil landslides, floods NHK

At least 36 people have died in floods and landslides triggered by downpours in Sao Paulo state, Brazil. Many others are missing.

The Sao Paulo state government on Sunday announced that a 7-year-old was among the dead.

Footage taken on Sunday shows large amounts of mud gushing toward buildings, and roadsides swallowing multiple vehicles as they cave in.

Aerial footage has confirmed large slope collapses resulting in roads flooded with sand and earth.

Rescue efforts are continuing as people are believed to remain trapped in mud and rubble.

The disaster occurred amid ongoing Carnival celebrations in Brazil. Multiple cities in Sao Paulo have canceled the festivities.
