Protests spread in France against deadly police shooting of teenager NHK

Protests against the shooting death of a teenager by police in a Paris suburb have been spreading, with some turning violent. More than 180 people have been detained.

French investigators say the 17-year-old youth was shot when he failed to stop after being ordered to by traffic police in Nanterre on Tuesday.

A video released by Reuters shows officers standing beside the driver's-side window of a car before one of them fires as the vehicle pulls away.

Investigators say the officer who fired the shot has been detained and is being investigated on suspicion of manslaughter.

The incident triggered protests in multiple towns around Paris. Police buildings and vehicles were set on fire. The French interior ministry says more than 180 people have been detained.

The ministry says it will deploy 40,000 police officers across the country.

President Emmanuel Macron is calling on the public to stay calm.

In 2022, a record 13 people died by shooting during traffic police inspections in France, sparking criticism against the police.
