China executes man convicted of fatal attack on Japanese school bus NHK

China has executed a man who was sentenced to death for a fatal knife attack on a Japanese school bus last year in the city of Suzhou in eastern China.

The Chinese man in his 50s attacked the school bus carrying Japanese children and killed a female Chinese bus attendant in June 2024. A Japanese woman and her child were injured.

A Chinese court handed down the death sentence in January. The man didn't appeal the ruling.

The Japanese Embassy in Beijing said it was informed by the Chinese authorities on Wednesday that the sentence had been carried out.

In the trial in January, the court reportedly made no reference with regard to Japan, and the man did not state his case. As to his motive, the judge reportedly said the man had become tired of living because of his debts.

Some Japanese people living in China have expressed concern that the trial did not uncover the reason for the attack on the school bus and other details of the incident.

In September last year, a man in his 40s killed a boy with a knife while the child was on his way to a Japanese school in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. A Chinese court handed down a death sentence.
