The United States and Britain have urged Hamas to accept an Israeli proposal for a ceasefire in the war in Gaza and the release of hostages held in the enclave. But the Palestinian group has reportedly rejected the US and British view that the proposal is "generous." Talks on a ceasefire and hostage release are underway mediated by countries including Egypt, as the fighting continues between Israel and Hamas. British Foreign Secretary David Cameron referred to the talks on Monday at a meeting of the World Economic Forum in Saudi Arabia. Cameron said the Israeli proposal contains a 40-day ceasefire and the release of "potentially thousands" of Palestinian prisoners in return for the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. Describing the proposal as "pretty generous," he called on Hamas to take the deal. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also called the proposal "extraordinarily generous," and urged Hamas to swiftly accept it. The Israeli side also reportedly said for the first time that it is open to discussing an end to the fighting if the hostages are freed. In comments made to Qatar-based satellite television Al Jazeera, a senior Hamas official said: "Stopping the attacks against Palestinians is not generous. The attack itself is a crime, so when you stop a crime, you can't claim that it's a generous action from the Israeli side." He said it is clear that Israel still doesn't want a complete ceasefire.
