Ukrainians still fleeing to Poland ahead of invasion anniversary NHK

Poland has accepted more Ukrainian evacuees than any other country since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine last year. With the fighting approaching the one-year mark, Ukrainians continue to seek safety in neighboring Poland.

Przemysl in southeastern Poland is close to the border with Ukraine. Families carrying heavy luggage arrived at the town's train station from the Ukrainian capital Kyiv on February 13.

A woman said she had escaped with her family from eastern Kharkiv.

She said the region had come under a massive attack two days before their escape. She described Russia's aggression as unbearable because she has a young granddaughter.

She said her family will stay in Poland until the war ends.

Przemysl provides temporary shelters for Ukrainian evacuees.

More than 30 people are offering aid, including meals and medicine, at one of these shelters.

A woman who fled by herself from Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine said many people were killed and a number of houses were destroyed in heavy shelling.

She added that it was heart-wrenching to leave home.

The shelter's operator, Igor Horkow, said up to 5,000 Ukrainians per day are arriving in Przemysl.

He noted that an increasing number of people are fleeing areas occupied by the Russian military and they said they could not go back.

He said the evacuees' physical and mental condition is getting worse and they are exhausted.

He expressed concern that Poland may not be able to cope with more evacuees if the war continues for a few more months.
