ASEAN foreign ministers discuss Myanmar NHK

Top diplomats from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations are gathering in Jakarta ahead of the bloc's summit talks starting Tuesday.

The foreign ministers discussed the ongoing bloodshed in Myanmar, where the military seized power over two years ago.

They reviewed the progress of the bloc's peace plan. The "Five-Point Consensus" calls for an immediate end to the violence.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said,"ASEAN can only steam forward in full power if it can ensure a peaceful and lasting solution in Myanmar."

Retno also said ASEAN will encourage inclusive dialogues between all stakeholders in Myanmar.

Indonesia, the chair country, says it's made 145 engagements with officials from the junta, the pro-democracy National Unity Government and ethnic groups.

A senior Indonesian official says another item on the agenda is territorial disputes over the South China Sea.

The summit comes soon after Beijing released a new map showing the so-called 10-dash line and its other territorial claims.

ASEAN will also hold a series of confabs with partner countries including Japan, the US, China and Russia. But the top leaders of the US, China and Russia won't attend.
