Japan visitor numbers continue to climb in August NHK

The number of foreign visitors to Japan topped two million for the third straight month in August.

The Japan National Tourism Organization estimates that more than 2.1 million travelers arrived last month.

Visitor numbers recovered to about 85 percent of the figure for August 2019. It is the first time a monthly tally has exceeded 80 percent of the comparable pre-pandemic level.

South Korea accounted for the most travelers, with 569,100. Taiwan followed, with 396,300. Visitors from mainland China totaled 364,100, while those from Hong Kong made up the fourth-largest proportion at 206,300.

The number of visitors from mainland China stood at 36 percent of the August 2019 figure. Beijing only lifted its restrictions on group tours to Japan early last month.

The total number of foreign arrivals is likely to continue to recover as the long holiday around China's National Day, starts at the end of September.
