ASEAN ministers to discuss Myanmar situation NHK

Foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations will hold a special meeting on Thursday in Jakarta to discuss the situation in Myanmar.
The talks in the Indonesian capital will come ahead of an ASEAN summit next month.

The 10-nation bloc has been leading efforts to implement a five-point peace "consensus" agreed with Myanmar's junta leader last year. The road map aims to end the conflict in the country that has continued since last year's coup.

It calls for an immediate end to the use of force and for a special envoy to mediate dialogue with all relevant parties. But little progress has been made on implementing the accord.

ASEAN has not invited Myanmar's military leader, Min Aung Hlaing, or the military-appointed foreign minister to its meetings since last year.

Cambodia, the current chair of the group, says the bloc won't invite the senior general to next month's summit, either.

Indonesia reportedly suggested holding the foreign ministers meeting this week amid no signs of progress in the situation in Myanmar.

Ministers are expected to discuss whether ASEAN should take a tougher stance against the member country.
