China has reported to Japan that it withdrew an earlier announcement mistakenly made by its Maritime Safety Administration.
The announcement said Chinese mobile mining ships for extracting natural gas would navigate in waters around the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea. But China says there are no such plans.
Japan's Foreign Ministry says the Chinese side notified it of the withdrawal on Thursday afternoon.
The ministry says the announcement had appeared on the website of China Maritime Safety Administration on Wednesday, saying mining boats would sail in the East China Sea from Thursday through Saturday.
The ministry says it made its protests to the Chinese side through a diplomatic channel since the announced area of operations is within Japan's exclusive economic zone. It is also in the waters around the Senkaku Islands. The ministry says the Chinese side made the withdrawal after its protests, explaining the announcement was due to a mistaken input.
The ministry says it will continue to monitor the situation closely and deal with the matter resolutely.
Japan controls the Senkaku Islands. China and Taiwan claim them. The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory, in terms of history and international law. It says there is no issue of sovereignty to be resolved over them.
