US President Donald Trump has accepted an invitation from King Charles to make a state visit to Britain. At the beginning of a bilateral summit at the White House on Thursday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer handed Trump a letter from the king. Trump read the letter on the spot and said, "We look forward to being there and honoring the king." He added, "Your country is a fantastic country, and it'll be our honor to be there." Trump made a state visit to Britain in 2019 during his first term at the invitation of the late Queen Elizabeth II. The proposed trip would be the second state visit for him. It is rare for Britain to host a foreign leader twice as a state guest. Starmer emphasized the significance of the proposed visit, saying "This is unprecedented, and I think that just symbolizes the strength of the relationship between us." Trump's first state visit to Britain caused controversy when some of his critics staged a protest rally in front of Buckingham Palace as Queen Elizabeth was hosting a banquet.
