Tokyo revises guidelines on hosting intl. sports events after Olympic scandals NHK

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has revised its guidelines on measures to prevent injustice when hosting international sporting events.

A panel of experts made the revision on Friday based on the central government's principles released after Tokyo drafted its original one last December.

The original was created to improve governance of event management in response to bribery and bid-rigging cases over sponsorship and other deals for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The revised guidelines say the metropolitan government should directly hire some staff for an organizing committee instead of accepting staff on loan from the private sector to eliminate conflict of interest.

The new guidelines also require disclosing the process of signing sponsorship contracts.

Panel members said hosting sporting events has a public nature, and information disclosure is key to win the public's trust.

They decided to introduce a disclosure framework that is in line with the metropolitan government's rules.

Tokyo will host the World Athletics Championships and the Deaflympics, an event for athletes with hearing impairment, in 2025.

The metropolitan government plans to continue examining the guidelines ahead of these events.
