Japanese automaker Daihatsu Motor is set to halt shipments of all its domestic and overseas models due to a third-party committee's discovery of additional safety data irregularities. The company's president, Okudaira Soichiro, held a press conference on Wednesday and said he takes the situation very seriously, as it shakes the foundation of his company as an automaker. It was found in April that Toyota Motor's fully owned subsidiary had rigged door parts in collision tests on cars for overseas markets. In May, it came to light that Daihatsu had improperly obtained government certification for hybrid vehicles for the Japanese market as well. The committee has confirmed irregularities for 64 vehicle types in total since 1989, including ones no longer in production. It found that the company also altered test data of emissions and fuel efficiency. The committee says Daihatsu had disrespected the certification tests. It blames rigid timelines for vehicle development and an organizational culture of harsh criticisms.
