Russia's military is intensifying its offensive in Ukraine, trying to seize the country's eastern strongholds. In the eastern region of Donetsk, fierce fighting continues in a Ukrainian stronghold in Bakhmut and Vuhledar, southwest of the region's capital. On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged that Russia is stepping up its offensive. Britain's defense ministry said in its intelligence update on Tuesday that Russia likely aims to divert Ukrainian forces from the heavily contested Bakhmut sector. It says Russia could continue to make local gains, but is unlikely to have "sufficient uncommitted troops in the area to achieve an operationally significant breakthrough." Ukraine is requesting fighter jets and tanks from Western countries to step up its counteroffensive. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Monday that any transferring of fighter jets would take place in coordination with NATO countries. The head of Ukraine's presidential office, Andriy Yermak, said in a social media post that Ukraine is continuing to ask for F-16 jets, and noted what he calls positive signals from Poland. US President Joe Biden was asked by reporters on Monday if the US will send F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine. He replied "No." Biden apparently hopes to avoid further escalation of fighting, as Russia would likely react sharply to such a move.
