Police in Tokyo say on-site inspections of male "host clubs" in the Kabukicho entertainment district have found over 70 percent of such establishments are in violation of a law.

The police raided 176 out of about 300 host clubs in Shinjuku Ward's Kabukicho district from Friday through Saturday under the adult entertainment businesses control law.

They confirmed violations at 132 clubs, or 75 percent of the raided establishments. Those include failing to properly display prices of "champagne towers" and luxury liquors, and putting up menu displays in out-of-the-way places. Employee rosters at some clubs had flaws.

Host clubs are bars where male drinking companions entertain female customers. The on-the-spot inspections come as malicious practices by such establishments targeting women have emerged as a problem. An increasing number of female clients are being forced into prostitution or other crimes to pay off their debts after running up a large tab.

The police say improper display of prices could lead to financial trouble when customers receive unexpectedly hefty bills. The police plan to summon the managers of clubs in violation of the law to demand improvements.
