An international high-level meeting on the plight of Rohingya Muslim refugees was held in Bangkok, Thailand, on Tuesday. The meeting aimed to urge the international community to renew its commitment to the Rohingya ahead of the Global Refugee Forum to be held in December in Geneva. UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi called for continued support of Rohingya refugees, as global attention is now focused on other crisis such as Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas conflict. He said that it is important not to forget existing crisis, otherwise "the Rohingya and countries hosting them, first and foremost, Bangladesh, would be penalized by this shift of attention." Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims fled Myanmar in 2017 to escape a brutal crackdown. Nearly one million refugees are now living in camps in neighboring Bangladesh. Grandi expressed a sense of crisis as the amount of aid has dropped sharply. The funding shortfall is affecting the wellbeing of the Rohingya refugees. He added that diminishing support "places an additional burden on those host countries, which is unfair. They are already hosting many refugees." He also said the international community needs to work to stabilize the situation in Myanmar, which is currently ruled by the military, to ensure the safe and dignified return of the refugees.
