A US-based researcher who won this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine reportedly learned of the honor about 12 hours after the announcement, because he was hiking in the mountains on vacation.
The Nobel committee on Monday awarded this year's prize to Fred Ramsdell, a scientific advisor for a US biotech firm, along with Japan's Sakaguchi Shimon and US-based scientist Mary Brunkow for their work in immunology.
The New York Times says Ramsdell had gone on vacation before the announcement, and was camping and hiking with his wife in the Rocky Mountains.
Ramsdell was contacted by the Nobel committee at around 2:00 a.m. on Monday, local time, but did not notice the call because he had his phone on airplane mode.
That afternoon, when the couple parked their vehicle at a campground in Montana, Ramsdell's wife noticed a number of congratulatory text messages.
Ramsdell told The New York Times: "I certainly didn't expect to win the Nobel Prize. It never crossed my mind."
