MLB: Padres announce 5-year deal with Japanese pitcher Matsui NHK

In Major League Baseball, the San Diego Padres announced on Saturday they had reached an agreement with Japanese pitcher Matsui Yuki for a five-year contract.

ESPN and other US media report the deal is worth 28 million dollars.

Matsui played with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in Japan for 10 seasons. He saved 39 games in the 2023 season, making him the saves leader for two seasons in a row, and the third time overall.

Matsui will be a teammate of veteran Japanese pitcher Darvish Yu. They played together for Japan this year at the World Baseball Classic.

The Padres are in the MLB's National League West, as are the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Japanese two-way star Ohtani Shohei signed a 10-year contract with the Dodgers, while Japanese pitcher Yamamoto Yoshinobu has reportedly also agreed to join.

The two teams are scheduled to play their 2024 opening series in Seoul on March 20-21, with four Japanese players on their rosters.
