The US House of Representatives has rejected a new budget bill backed by President-elect Donald Trump. The stopgap bill was aimed at preventing a federal government shutdown.
                
The bill was rejected by the House on Thursday. It was submitted by House Speaker Mike Johnson, who is a member of the Republican Party. The current budget will expire on Friday.
                
The bill was endorsed by Trump and included over 100 billion dollars in disaster aid for areas, such as the hurricane-stricken regions. It also called for the government debt limit to be suspended for two years.
                
On Tuesday, Democratic and Republican leaders expressed support for a stopgap bill that would have allowed federal government funds to continue to flow until March of 2025. The bill also included disaster aid funds.
                
But on the following day, Trump announced that he opposed the bill.
                
It is not clear whether another budget bill can be created and approved before the Friday deadline. If not, there could be a partial government shutdown.
