Japan to host nuclear disarmament ministerial talks at UN, FM Kamikawa says NHK

Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko says her country will host a ministerial-level meeting on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation at United Nations headquarters in New York on March 18.

Kamikawa made the announcement at a symposium in Tokyo on Wednesday. Japan will assume the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council next month.

She said Japan will work firmly as a Security Council member so that it can fulfill its responsibilities.

Kamikawa said Tokyo seeks to accelerate discussion between nuclear and non-nuclear states, based on the results of the Group of Seven nations' summit in Hiroshima last year. The G7 summit issued the Hiroshima Vision on Nuclear Disarmament.

Foreign Ministry officials say their minister is considering attending the meeting if her schedule at the Diet permits.
