The Israeli military has attacked one of the largest refugee camps in northern Gaza. Israel says the air strike killed a senior Hamas commander. But local health officials say dozens of civilians were killed. In southern Gaza, a group of injured people has left the besieged territory, crossing into Egypt. Egyptian authorities had said more than 400 foreign passport holders would be permitted to leave the territory. Multiple media outlets say several foreign nationals passed through the Rafah border crossing. Egyptian media say several injured people have also crossed the border for medical treatment. They say that comes after Qatar brokered a deal between Egypt, Israel and Hamas. But in northern Gaza, the Israeli military attacked the Jabalia camp, which houses nearly 120,000 registered refugees. Local officials say at least 50 people were killed, many of them civilians. A little girl was seen unable to get down from the top of a damaged building. A nearby hospital was flooded with injured people. Some were receiving treatment in hallways. Israeli defense officials say Hamas used the refugee camp as a base. Israel Defense Forces Spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said, "Infantry and armored forces took over a central stronghold from Hamas in the west of the city of Jabaliya. This bastion was used for the terrorist operation from where the terrorists came out for the massacre." The Hamas-run interior ministry says other refugee camps were also subjected to air raids. The head of the UN refugee agency called for an immediate ceasefire. UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said, "These are surely the gravest events that we have seen." He added, "There are not many options here but humanitarian ceasefire as soon as possible to put an end to this." The conflict triggered by the Hamas attack on October 7 has claimed more than 10,000 lives -- about 8,800 in Gaza according to Palestinian authorities, and at least 1,400 in Israel.
