Tokyo Metropolitan Police have reportedly obtained an arrest warrant for the mother of a 12-year-old Thai girl who was allegedly forced into sex work.
Investigative sources say the mother is suspected of violating the Child Welfare Act by handing her daughter over to the owner of a private-room massage parlor in Tokyo.
The owner of the massage parlor was arrested on suspicion of coercing the girl into engaging in the services, in violation of the Labor Standards Act.
The girl's mother left her daughter at the massage parlor before departing Japan, and is currently being detained in Taiwan. The police have investigated the possible involvement of the mother in the case, which may amount to human trafficking.
Thai police officers are visiting Japan and held talks with members of the Tokyo police and the National Police Agency on Wednesday. They are expected to make arrangements with Taiwan to have the mother transferred to Japan for questioning.
The Thai police also inspected the massage parlor. The Japanese and Thai police are expected to jointly investigate the scope of the alleged human trafficking, as well as look into the possibility of brokers being systematically involved.
