The European Parliament has adopted a resolution deploring the alleged deaths of thousands of migrant workers who were helping Qatar prepare to host the soccer World Cup.
                
The parliament passed the non-binding text on the human rights situation in the country on Thursday.
                
The resolution urges the Qatari authorities to fully investigate migrant worker deaths that reportedly occurred during stadium construction and other preparations for the tournament.
                
It calls on the Qatari authorities to provide compensation to workers&#039; families in cases where deaths resulted from working conditions.
                
The resolution also deplores the lack of transparency and responsible risk-assessment in the process to award the World Cup to Qatar in 2010.
                
The text urges EU countries to exert pressure on the global and European governing bodies of soccer, FIFA and UEFA, to fundamentally reform the world body, which it says is characterized by &quot;rampant, systemic and deep-rooted&#039;&#039; corruption.
                
The resolution seeks the introduction of democratic and transparent procedures for awarding World Cups and the strict implementation of human rights and sustainability criteria for host countries.
