Colorado's top court disqualifies Trump from 2024 presidential ballot NHK

The top court in the western US state of Colorado has ruled that former President Donald Trump is disqualified from running for president in the state.

The Colorado Supreme Court decided on Tuesday that Trump had engaged in insurrection by inciting his supporters to attack the US Capitol in 2021.

The court said the decision is based on the US Constitution, which bars any person "engaged in insurrection or rebellion" from office, and that Trump is ineligible to appear on Colorado's 2024 presidential ballot.

US media reports say this is the first time a court has taken Trump off the ballot.

Trump's side plans to appeal to the nation's highest court. The ruling will be temporarily suspended if the case is accepted.

Similar cases seeking to disqualify Trump from presidential ballot have been filed in more than half of the US states, with debates ongoing in several states.

Trump is the current front-runner for the Republican nomination. Attention is focused on how the court decision will affect his campaign.
