Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip have carried out a large-scale surprise attack on Israel. Israeli emergency medical officials say at least 70 people have been killed and hundreds of others injured. The militants launched their attack on Saturday morning. An unknown number of gunmen from the Gaza Strip invaded Israeli towns. Elsewhere, they clashed with security forces. The Islamist group Hamas says its fighters have taken several Israelis captive. It was an attack of unprecedented size and nature. In addition to the raids, more than 2,000 rockets were launched from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel and other areas. The Israeli military has retaliated with airstrikes on Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip. Local health officials there say the strikes have killed nearly 200 people.
