US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has called on the Group of Seven nations to raise tariffs on countries purchasing crude oil from Russia. The buyers of Russian oil include China and India.
Bessent made the call during an online meeting of G7 finance ministers and central bank governors on Friday.
Bessent said that sufficient economic pressure on Russia to end the killing in Ukraine will only come from a unified effort to cut off Russia's sources of funding.
US President Donald Trump's administration has been calling for more economic pressure on Moscow. Washington raised its additional tariffs on imports from India to 50 percent in August, citing India's purchases of crude oil and petroleum products from Russia.
The US Treasury Department says Bessent will meet Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng during a visit to Spain that starts on Friday. It says they will discuss trade and money laundering issues, among other topics.
