Japanese Major Leaguer Suzuki Seiya has dropped out of Japan's roster for the upcoming World Baseball Classic.
The Chicago Cubs outfielder complained of tightness in his left side during batting practice on Saturday at the team's training camp in Mesa, Arizona.
He stayed out of a spring training game and underwent an MRI exam on Sunday at a hospital in the state.
Nippon Professional Baseball Organization announced on Tuesday that Suzuki will not play in the WBC, which opens on March 8.
Suzuki batted fourth for Team Japan in all games at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Japan won the gold.
He was expected to take an active role as a key Japan team player in the WBC.
He packed on about 10 kilograms for this year's pre-season training camp, which began on February 20.
He said at the time that he was totally focused on the WBC.
