Washington D.C. has filed a lawsuit against US President Donald Trump's administration over the deployment of National Guard troops in the district. Authorities filed a complaint with the federal district court on Thursday. They claim it was illegal to deploy the National Guard troops without the consent of, or a request from, the mayor. They are asking the judge to block the deployment. Trump ordered the deployment in August. At the time, he said that violent crime in Washington was out of control. About 2,300 National Guard troops were deployed to the capital. The attorney general of Washington D.C. issued a statement. He said, "We've filed this action to put an end to this illegal federal overreach." Meanwhile, a White House spokesperson said, "President Trump is well within his lawful authority to deploy the National Guard in Washington DC." Earlier, the president indicated that he plans to deploy National Guard troops in various places. Among the reasons he cited was the need to fight against crime. In June, National Guard troops were deployed to Los Angeles in response to protests over crackdowns on immigrants. But the federal district court ruled earlier this month that the troop deployment in LA was illegal.
