Indonesian authorities say 264 Rohingya minority Muslims have come ashore in the country's Aceh province. Local police say two boats carrying the refugees were discovered on Sunday. They were sent on Monday to a shelter run by UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency. UNHCR said in a report published last November that more than 2,400 Rohingya people had arrived in Indonesia's Aceh and North Sumatra provinces since November 2023. The agency pointed out that Rohingya people tend to travel by boat between November and March, when sea conditions are favorable. Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya have fled Myanmar to escape the military crackdown, with many living in Bangladesh. Some take rickety vessels to reach other countries, as they are unable to return to Myanmar.
