Lunar New Year holidaymakers crowd tourist spots near Japan's Mt. Fuji NHK

Tourist spots near Japan's Mount Fuji are crowded with visitors from China and elsewhere ahead of the Lunar New Year holidays.

Resorts on the Yamanashi Prefecture side of Japan's highest peak have been bustling this week with an increasing number of inbound tourists.

At a ski resort in the prefecture's Narusawa Village, 151 groups from China and Taiwan rented skis or other items during the week through Thursday. The figure is up about 70 percent from the previous week.

A family from Taiwan who took nine consecutive holidays said they wanted to visit Japan to enjoy its beauty. They also said they had snowboarded for four days.

A hotel near Lake Kawaguchi said it is almost fully booked from this week to February 10, with about 90 percent of the reservations made by people from China. The hotel manager said winter is the off season, but the hotel has received more reservations this year than last year.

There has also been a growing number of tourists near a spot where Mount Fuji appears to be perched on the roof of a convenience store in the town of Fujikawaguchiko.

The spot has attracted tourists who want to take scenic photos, with some of them disrupting traffic and creating a dangerous situation. On Friday, some tourists were seen jaywalking.

Town officials said they are not at the moment considering increasing the number of security guards, but added that they are closely watching the situation.
