A large amount of snow has accumulated on the Japan Sea side of western Japan and the Hokuriku region. In some areas, the amount of snow exceeds over three times the average year.
                
Weather officials are urging people to watch out for traffic disruption and accidents during snow removal work.
                
The Meteorological Agency says a lingering powerful winter pressure system has brought the heavy snow. In the 24 hours through Thursday morning, snowfall reached 61 centimeters in Miyagi Prefecture&#039;s Kurihara City, 52 centimeters in Shiga Prefecture&#039;s Maibara City, and 49 centimeters in Kyoto Prefecture&#039;s Maizuru City, all record-breaking amounts for January.
                
As of 6 p.m. on Thursday, 47 centimeters of snow accumulation was recorded in Gifu Prefecture&#039;s Sekigahara Town, 44 centimeters in Hyogo Prefecture&#039;s Toyooka City, and 11 centimeters in Ishikawa Prefecture&#039;s Kanazawa City.
                
The accumulation exceeds three times that of an average year in some areas in the Tokai and Hokuriku regions and the Sea of Japan side of western Japan.
                
In Hokkaido, snowy winds are intensifying, and extremely strong winds are observed in some areas. The high winds and rough seas are expected to continue in Hokkaido despite forecasts that the winter pressure system around Japan will gradually ease through Friday.
                
Temperatures remained low on Thursday in areas that had heavy snow. Accumulated snow lingers and road surfaces are frozen in some areas. The agency is calling on people to stay on the alert for the lingering snow and icy roads, and also for avalanches and high waves.
                
Agency officials are warning that buildings damaged by the recent strong earthquakes in central Japan may collapse by the weight of snow.
                
They say temperatures remain low in disaster-hit areas in the Noto Peninsula. The lowest for Friday morning is forecast at 1 degree Celsius in Kanazawa City and 0 degree Celsius in Wajima City.
                
As the time spent at shelters drags on, a growing number of evacuees have fallen ill. Some have died from causes allegedly related to the disaster.
                
Authorities are advising evacuees to take precautions against hypothermia, such as using blankets or exercising to stay warm.
