Japan's biggest auto show has opened its doors in Chiba City near Tokyo. One focus this time is sparking cooperation between automakers and startup firms as global competition intensifies in fields like electric vehicles and autonomous driving. More than 200 companies, many of them startups, are taking part in the Japan Mobility Show 2024, which kicked off on Tuesday. The event was previously known as the Tokyo Motor Show. Toyota Motor is showcasing new portable hydrogen cartridge technology. This is designed to facilitate the transport and supply of hydrogen, an energy source expected to help with decarbonization efforts. Toyota says the cartridge can also be used outdoors to generate electricity in fuel cell systems, or as fuel for cooking. Looking to increase EV use, the startups are showcasing compact charging equipment for small parking lots, as well as wireless charging technology. The Chairman of Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Katayama Masanori, says "various electrification technologies for a carbon-neutral society are maturing. It's very important for automakers to collaborate with startups and businesses in different sectors." The exhibition hall also has a negotiation area where automakers and startups can get together and explore new business opportunities.
