The governor of California on Wednesday declared a state of emergency as a series of wildfires continued to tear through Southern California.
State fire authorities and local media say three major fires that began in September have scorched more than 40,000 hectares in a matter of days.
Fueled by a heatwave, winds and dry vegetation, the burned area in the fire that broke out on Sunday outside Los Angeles grew more than 12 times in size between Tuesday and early Wednesday.
The Los Angeles Times said more than 30 homes have been destroyed and about 2,500 structures are threatened by the flames.
The newspaper also said that at least 13 people have been injured.
Reuters news agency reports that the area of land burned in California this year is already twice as large as that in 2023.
