Prabowo confident of victory in Indonesian presidential election NHK

Indonesians have been to the polls in one of the world's biggest single-day elections. Unofficial statistics give Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto a big lead. He's already confident of victory in the three-way race, which he said would be "a victory for all Indonesians."

Prabowo said Wednesday preliminary counts suggest he will secure more than half of the votes and avoid a runoff. Still, he said he will wait for the official results from the election commission.

Prabowo describes himself as incumbent President Joko Widodo's successor and pledges to continue with the same policies.

But among those critical of the current administration, former Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has been courting votes. He said on Wednesday that he hopes all goes well with the election and that it's time for change.

Meanwhile, former Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo has indicated he is willing to keep President Joko's main policies. He said on election day that the people will show the quality of Indonesia's democracy.

More than 200 million Indonesians are eligible to cast a ballot. Voters went to more than 820,000 polling stations across the country.

In the center of Jakarta, people stepped into voting booths and punched holes in ballots printed with photos of the candidates.

One voter said President Joko places great importance on road construction, but he is sure people are more interested in cheaper food.

The election commission says it will likely take about a month for the official results to come out.
