A recent article from Futurism highlights a remarkable development in China’s renewable energy efforts: an entire mountain range in Guizhou province has been blanketed with solar panels. Drone footage circulating on social media showcases this vast installation, illustrating China’s commitment to expanding its solar energy capacity.

Guizhou’s challenging terrain and climate make it unsuitable for industrial agriculture, but these same conditions are ideal for solar energy projects. The province’s first solar installation began in 2015, and by 2023, its solar capacity had grown to 15 million kilowatts, supported by government subsidies and affordable loans.

Nationally, China has pledged to triple its renewable energy output by 2030. As of 2024, the country accounts for 64% of the world’s utility-scale solar and wind construction, with 339 gigawatt-hours of renewable infrastructure underway. Despite coal still providing nearly 57% of China’s electricity, the rapid expansion of solar projects like the one in Guizhou signifies significant progress toward carbon neutrality by 2060.
