Japan to establish AI safety institute on Feb. 14 NHK

The Japanese government is set to launch a national research institute next Wednesday to study the safety of generative AI. The move comes as the world faces the growing risks involving AI technologies.

The Japan AI Safety Institute will be established under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. The institute will be headed by Murakami Akiko, an expert in the digital field who is an executive officer of Sompo Japan Insurance.

The institute will work with organizations in other countries to study safety assessment methods and standards for AI use. They aim to address risks of AI spreading false information and infringing on copyrights.

Science and Technology Policy Minister Takaichi Sanae met with Murakami on Thursday. The minister asked her to conduct research on AI in coordination with other countries.

Murakami replied that she hopes to help Japan's economy grow by ensuring that AI technologies are safe.
