South Korea reports first foot-and-mouth case in nearly 2 years NHK

South Korea is taking measures after it confirmed a case of foot-and-mouth disease at a cattle farm. Yonhap News Agency says the country last reported such an outbreak in May 2023.

South Korea's Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced on Friday that it had confirmed the infection at a beef cattle farm in the southwestern province of South Jeolla.

The ministry said more than 180 cattle at the farm would be culled. It also said it is taking measures to prevent the disease from spreading, including disinfecting efforts focusing on nearby farms and roads.

In addition, the ministry says it will move up a plan to vaccinate cattle and other livestock at farms across the country from April to later this month.

The ministry is calling on local governments to take swift preventive measures.
