A member of NHK World's staff in the Gaza Strip says people there have no safe haven, as the Israeli military continues heavy airstrikes against the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas. Mohammed Shehada was speaking from Gaza in an online interview with NHK on Tuesday. He said no one can sleep as a barrage of airstrikes is unleashed every 30 or 45 minutes. He added he has only slept for about 10 hours in three days. Shehada said the Israeli military warned people to evacuate to safety, but there are no shelters in Gaza. He noted that schools that were used as shelters have now been targeted as well. Shehada said people in Gaza have lost their sense of security because they have no idea where to hide and wonder whether the place they are in is safe. He said they are afraid a bomb could fall on them anytime. He said he cannot explain in words or videos how they are feeling. Shehada and another NHK staffer were forced to flee, as the Israeli military on Monday warned residents to evacuate immediately, saying it would carry out an airstrike on the area where NHK's office is located. He said he had learned about the warning when he came back to the office after covering a hospital where bodies were brought in one after another. He said when he looked outside from his office on the 11th floor, he saw residents hurriedly fleeing. He also quickly packed up and evacuated to a hotel. But an airstrike hit an area near the hotel around 1 a.m. on Tuesday, reportedly killing three journalists who went out to cover the situation. Shehada said electricity and the internet are available in the hotel, but added they could be cut off at any time. He said Israel claims that it is only targeting Hamas's military facilities, but people in Gaza saw hospitals and other civilian buildings attacked. Shehada said the victims were civilians, including many children, women and the elderly. He called on the international community to find ways to stop the war in Gaza as soon as possible.
